| Abstract | Although sugarcane crop is of great relevance to Brazil, not only for the economy but also for the production of ethanol, it may produce a significant impact on the environment. The emission of particulate material, greenhouse gases and tropospheric ozone precursors to the atmosphere due to burning activities during harvest have a negative impact on the environment. An important impact has been observed in relation to occurrence of respiratory tract diseases. Even with policies to reduce the sugar cane burnt practice in the next years, this practice can cause social and environmental damages during the period when is still applied. This way, it is necessary to improve the scientific knowledge about social and environmental impacts caused by the growth of ethanol production from sugar cane in Brazil. This work deals with the use of geotechnologies and remote sensing data to do a preliminary analysis of impacts of air pollutants from burning activities of sugar cane specially in pre harvest on human health, in Araçatuba Region - São Paulo in 2006 and 2007. The results showed some significant relationships between burning activities of sugar cane and respiratory tract diseases, but it is necessary to carry out more studies to comprove it. | ||||||
